Mobile messaging apps are the new channels for socializing. While WhatsApp has been the global leader in the messaging app arena, Chinese messaging app from Tencent, globally known as WeChat has been spiking its growth globally too.
According to Tech In Asia, Tencent has recently revealed its Q3 2013 earnings report and it has stated that WeChat has 271.9 million monthly active users in Q3. The latest numbers represent both the Chinese and global numbers making it up by 15.3 percent from Q2, and up 124.3 percent from the same time a year ago.
Though the new numbers talk about monthly active users but the company has not revealed the latest overseas numbers. Back in the month of August, it had shared that it has passed 100 million registered user accounts outside China. During the same time the company has also announced that it has a strong presence in markets like India, Malaysia, Mexico and Philippines. Countries like Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand are also supporting WeChat’s growth.
Not to mention that the growth of the messaging app has come with a cost that is the aggressive marketing push the company has done over the time globally. While it has been making a strong push in the Indian market by endorsing Bollywood celebrities, same time we saw the firm focusing in the South American market too. To get the people talking, WeChat launched a TV commercial featuring football star, Lionel Messi, which was aired in 15 countries. These expenses have affected the company’s accounts as was reported.
On the other hand, WhatsApp, had revealed earlier that it has 300 million active users globally that have been procured without any marketing spend from the firm. WhatsApp does lead the race but WeChat is not far behind.
